Brands are the essence of a business. They help to distinguish products and services from competitors, and to communicate with customers and potential customers what your business stands for. In the end, your brand’s objective is to make your product or service more recognizable to your customers. With so many brands out there, what’s yours doing right? How can you make it a better choice? Here are some tips to help you create an effective brand.

The first step in building a great brand is knowing what you want. Depending on the industry, brands can be as simple as a logo or a word. In the case of clothing, a brand may include a name or a design, a symbol, or a feature. A brand is typically associated with a particular product or service, which helps create brand equity. This equity benefits the company selling the product. Some brands, like Ferrari, also offer exclusive designer lines.

If you’re looking for an athletic shoe, look no further than Active Brands. The company is a fast-growing, premium sportswear company with brands like Kari Tra a, Daehlie, Sweet Protection, Bula, Asnes, and Vossatassar. The brand was founded in the UK, but has since become a worldwide staple. With a diverse line of menswear ranging from tracksuits and sweatshirts to shirts and jackets, Gym King is an excellent option.

Throughout history, people have used fashion as an indicator of social class and status, and as a gauge for their own style. Today, we can see a range of new trends in clothing, from gender-free collections to clothes that block cell phone radiation. The world of fashion is a vast industry, with millions of people designing, sewing, and dyeing clothing each year. Despite this, many traditional clothes and styles are still in use, and the trend toward customized clothing is growing.

Fast fashion is a major trend in the fashion industry. Until the mid-1990s, clothing was mainly produced and sold once a year. Today, however, this isn’t the case. In fact, fast fashion is a constant cycle that continues every year. It begins with a seasonality in the style of clothing, and ends with a fad, or season, and ends with the same trend in a few months. This means that the fashion industry needs to innovate to stay competitive.

Athleisure wear is a hybrid between streetwear and athletic attire. It is a trend that began in the late 1990s and has been gaining ground in recent years. Designed to be both functional and comfortable, athleisure clothing can instantly boost a look. In fact, this clothing category was recently recognized by the Merriam-Webster dictionary. In 1977, Lululemon released the first pair of Boogie Pants.

There are many definitions of sports, and many activities are not actually sports. Nonetheless, some are clearly considered sports, including golf, cheerleading, dance, and even fishing. Although these activities may not be officially recognized as “sports,” they do provide a unique way to develop the five components of physical fitness. Here are a few examples of the many benefits of participation in a sport. Let’s look at some of these different categories and why they are important.

Active sports are associated with individualism, independence, spontaneity, autonomy, and self-reliance. They also represent functional practicality and fit for purpose. They can also convey a sense of fashion and dynamism. These attributes can be reflected in the clothing worn by the participants. Today, sustainability has become a key issue when it comes to sport. But how does it impact athletes? How can it benefit society? Here are some reasons.

Innovative design: Sportswear brands must be innovative and adapt to a constantly-changing market. Customers of activewear want clothes that fit their unique lifestyle and help them reach their goals. The industry is highly competitive on social media, and sportswear brands are often the best at it. They also tend to do e-commerce very well, offering customisation, and utilizing all available channels. But it takes a lot of innovation to stay on top in this field.

Technology is the knowledge and tools that allow us to solve problems or make our lives easier. This includes the internet, television, cell phones, and computers. There are many different types of technology. Listed below are some of the most common types. All of them can be categorized as “useful,” “useless,” and ‘necessary’. Some of them are more useful than others. Some may not be immediately obvious, while others are important to our everyday lives.

Fashion is a big industry that generates an estimated $1.5 trillion a year, yet it is a field that has barely changed in the last 20 years. While manual labor is inexpensive in many parts of the world, high-cost production costs can easily be outsourced. But rising social concerns about wages and working conditions have led to new, exciting technologies. For example, the Internet has made it possible for companies to offer more personalized items to their customers.

Sports technology is transforming the way we compete and enjoy our favorite sports. Previously, only fitness trackers and wristbands could measure performance. Now, sensors are sewn into jerseys, woven into sneakers, and clipped to apparel. Eventually, sports will be played without traditional equipment. But for now, this is the only way to stay competitive in the world of sport. With this new technology, athletes can monitor their performance outside of the lab.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “complete physical, mental, and social well-being and the absence of disease or disability.” According to the 2017 Massachusetts State-Health Assessment, the determinants of health are not the genes, but rather the social environment in which people live. The amount of money, power, and resources available to individuals and communities has a strong influence on the way they live and the state of their health. These determinants of human wellbeing are often not directly controlled by genetics. Nonetheless, they are shaped by institutions and policies created by those with money and power.

The primary product of Hyperice is the massage therapy gun. The company’s “HyperSmart” operating system integrates digital and physical activity data and makes personalized routine recommendations based on a user’s profile and the intensity of workouts. These algorithms have been developed in collaboration with Apple Health, Strava, and Garmin, to help users find the right routine for their lifestyle. Once the device is connected, the user will be prompted to download an app to monitor their physical activity and personal fitness levels.

The World Health Organization (WHO) constitution recognises health as a basic human right. This means that every human being is entitled to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health, without discrimination due to race, religion, or political beliefs. The right to health can be promoted through the promotion of healthy activities, reducing harmful ones, and preventing situations that harm people’s health. However, some of the factors affecting the condition of our health are based on our choices and others are rooted in societal and structural conditions.

Brands are important for businesses. They provide a consistent umbrella under which a wide variety of products and services can be offered. Having a brand offers tremendous strategic and economic leverage. In addition to this, a brand also makes it easier to market products, services, and ideals. So, what are the benefits of a brand? What are the reasons for creating a brand? Let’s take a look at some of the top benefits of brand building.

Authenticity. Brands that have an ethical stance on issues that affect people’s lives are more likely to get the attention of consumers. Gen Zers, for example, want brands that support LGBTQ causes. Women also want a brand that is authentic, so activewear and outerwear brands should take this into account. These concerns should be considered when creating a brand’s vision and mission. Hopefully, the companies will continue to innovate to meet the needs of consumers.

Performance. A good brand should offer the best in performance and durability. Adidas has a strong reputation in athletic clothing. Its iconic mountain logo is instantly recognizable. Its products are made from recycled materials and are eco-friendly. Besides making functional apparel, these brands also support a sustainable lifestyle. This ensures that consumers can wear the clothes they want without worrying about damaging the environment. There are also some unique brands that stand out from the crowd.

The study of fashion follows a 5-stage cycle. A new trend enters the market in the first stage and goes through the entire life cycle. The last stage is the introduction stage. Retailers and consumers need to be aware of these stages because they can tell if a particular style is in style or is about to go out of style. If a style is out of fashion, it will be hard to predict when it will be back in style.

The development of collaborative design processes is an ongoing trend in the fashion industry. Several examples of this include the work of Andy Warhol, Christel/O’Donnell, and McCann. The co-design process involves consumers at every stage of the process and allows for greater customer engagement. As the democratization of high-performance sportswear has resulted in growth markets for fashion, this concept has been successful in the fashion world. The co-design process recognizes that the interests of consumers in style, color, and price are similar.

In addition to using cryptocurrencies to pay for products, fashion brands are also looking to the Internet as a source of data. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can help luxury brands generate new insights and find new sales opportunities. For example, a Paris-based tech startup, Heuritech, has developed a platform for analyzing millions of images on social media in order to create clothing that is both fashionable and unique. Moreover, the technology can be used to predict trends.

It is difficult to say exactly when sports started, but they have always been part of children’s play. Even prehistoric art depicts hunters pursuing their prey with joy and abandon. While sports have become a popular form of entertainment, judging is subjective. Ancient civilizations became obsessed with hunting, making it an end in itself. However, today we can see a range of activities that are considered sports and include the five components of physical fitness.

While many brands are focused on health, fitness, or notifications, others are more specialized, such as wearables. Under Armour, for example, has a dedicated creator in their shop. They are also better at e-commerce than Nike. They offer customisation options and sell through all possible channels, allowing them to stay ahead of competitors and stay one step ahead of their competition. For sports apparel, the best technology is a smartphone.

Some sports use smart apparel to monitor health and performance. There are numerous ways that smart apparel can improve sports and prevent injuries. The most popular ones involve a combination of apparel and sports equipment, and they can be worn by both the athlete and spectators. For example, some people opt for smart sports clothing when they are playing soccer or basketball. This allows them to stay informed at all times, and helps them make the best decisions. Ultimately, the wearables will provide the tools that help athletes play their best.

We have become dependent on technology in so many ways, from providing access to the internet to providing vaccines for the masses. The emergence of new technologies has allowed us to do so, and has allowed us to make the world a better place. However, not all technology is created equal, and some forms are more useful than others. Here are some examples of technology that is particularly beneficial. The following are just a few of the technological advancements that we have made.

Fashion is one industry that has consistently been at the forefront of technology. It has always been a forward-thinking, cyclical industry, and is estimated to be worth $3T by the end of the decade. With the help of new technologies, the industry is gaining ground and making fashion more sustainable than ever. And with the ability to customise any product, tech is making the fashion industry more profitable and efficient than ever before. But the real impact on the fashion industry is yet to come.

Today, elite athletes don’t use steel bikes or wooden equipment. They are clad in polyurethane swimsuits. This breakthrough has drastically improved performance and resulted in multiple world records. In sports and the outdoors, technology is essential for the health of its users. This is why the Olympic Commission is investing in smart watches and smart trainers for its athletes. It will help them adapt better to high intensity activities, which is essential for their performance.

Health is defined as an individual’s physical, mental, and social capacities. In essence, health is the ability to maintain homeostasis and recover from adverse events. This is different from physical health, which refers to a person’s ability to function normally. The term also encompasses one’s emotional state and the relationships in which they participate. However, both types are important. Here are some ways to assess your own health.

The primary product of Hyperice is a massage therapy gun with an operating system that combines physical activity and digital activity. The company uses proprietary algorithms to analyze physical activity data and recommend customized workouts based on the individual’s profile. The gun’s technology also integrates with Apple Health, Strava, and Garmin. The software analyzes your workout intensity to recommend the best routines. The software allows you to track the intensity of each workout to determine what is right for your body.

The third definition of health has to do with how we define health. While it is true that we have to take steps to reduce disease risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle, we also have to consider our own values. People tend to place high value on their health, which motivates them to take preventive measures and receive treatment for illnesses. But how do we measure these factors? And how do we measure them? In today’s world, this is not an easy task, and we need to make it as easy as possible.

A brand is a word or phrase that uniquely identifies a company’s goods and services. According to Nielsen Media Research, there are more than 500,000 brands worldwide, covering 2,000 product categories. They enable customers to recognize the makers or providers of the goods or services. Over time, these brands acquire reputations for their quality, value, reliability, and price level. Consumers use brands to make decisions among competing offerings. As such, brands are convenient and highly abbreviated tools of communication.

Cult brands often appeal to a devoted community of customers. Examples include Patagonia, Apple, Supreme, White Claw, and Crossfit. Several cult brands are popular with a niche customer base. They are renowned for their unique styles and are popular worldwide. However, their products often don’t have a wide-spread following. In the UK, for instance, clothing giants Macy’s and John Lewis have their own private labels, including a line of underwear designed specifically for pregnant women.

Celebrity brands like Nike and Serena Williams also have their own unique identities. They are not just professional athletes, but also role models for an active lifestyle. These brands have their own social media pages and often work with individual athletes as influencers. These high-profile personalities can produce quality content and help their products appear relevant to the consumers. They are great for marketing purposes because their fans can see the athletes as authentic and trustworthy. There are many different ways to engage celebrities in your brand’s campaign.

Fashion is a social process that occurs across cultures. It refers to the behavior of an individual that is considered appropriate for the time and situation. A person can be fashionable or not. In other words, their style is dictated by their environment. The following examples of fashion are common in different settings. But, what is the best way to stay current? How do we know what is in vogue and when it will become obsolete? How do we know what to wear and when to wear it?

One way to combat the deteriorating state of the economy is to make clothing and accessories more sustainable. Many fashion brands have begun using biotech products. Everlane, for example, has used fermentation of special types of yeast to create a material that resembles leather. By using biotechnology in the manufacturing process, the company does not need livestock for its production and distribution. Other fashion companies, such as Stein Mart, have begun using Mylo, a product made from synthetic materials. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) could have a role to play in creating fashions that are more sustainable.

In the realm of sports apparel, the market is growing at a fast pace. The advent of a pandemic and increased levels of physical activity have accelerated this trend. In fact, the sales of athleisure clothing are predicted to reach 40% in 2020. And the term “athleisure” wasn’t even a word until 2016, when the Merriam-Webster dictionary officially included it as a term. Interestingly, the term has its origins in an ad in the 70s, which is regarded as a turning point in sports aesthetics. This ad fueled the jogger craze in the U.S.

Sport, as a competitive activity, has always been a popular activity, whether at school or at a club. According to historians, people have been engaging in sports since prehistoric times. The oldest drawings of hunters show them pursuing their prey with joy and abandon. Early civilizations derived many of their cultural values from hunting, and it was later adopted as a form of entertainment. As a result, sports have evolved into a vital part of our everyday life.

The active sports industry is a growing global industry, with a range of cultural and economic benefits. They can promote individualism, spontaneity, independence, autonomy, and functionality. In addition to that, active sports have a high level of fashion and sophistication, and are often associated with dynamism and the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. The sport industry is becoming increasingly conscious of sustainability and environmental issues, which is reflected in the fashion and design of its products.

Using innovative technologies, sports companies can engage in omnichannel success. The key to a successful marketing campaign is consistency. Consumers find it hard to differentiate between different brands, but sports marketers can help clients achieve this. Moreover, they can ensure brand alignment through effective branding. The sports marketing firm can implement a cohesive online marketing strategy for their clients. The sports industry is constantly evolving, and the sports marketing industry can take full advantage of this new market.

Modern technology enables people to work faster and more efficiently. Computers have many features that allow them to quickly perform basic thought processes. Similarly, the Internet allows us to get up-to-date news and information on any subject. For example, people can get real-time updates on events around the world by simply using their computer. Before the introduction of computers, humans only had access to tools made from obsidian and stone. However, in today’s world, you can find products from space programs being used in manufacturing.

Fashion is one industry that has been influenced by technology. The fashion industry generates about $1.5 trillion in revenue every year. However, over the past 20 years, the industry has not changed much. Low-cost manual labor is available in many countries, so mass-produced clothing is no longer as desirable as it once was. Furthermore, the rise of environmental concerns over fair wages have spurred designers to incorporate electronics and other devices into their designs.

Technology is making sports more engaging and fun. Smart clothing can make exercise more enjoyable for both athletes and spectators. Some wearable devices, such as those developed by Reflexion, track a person’s progress in a specific exercise program. These connected devices can also help athletes monitor their physical health and train more effectively. They can monitor and train more clients at a time. These technologies are revolutionizing the way sports are played. In the future, even your everyday clothes can be smart.

The notion of health can be confusing. Whether we feel good or not depends on our environment, and what we consider a good health condition may be a disease. A person’s physical condition is only one factor in determining a person’s health. Mental health refers to emotional and social resources. People need to be healthy to be productive and maintain relationships. In contrast, mental and emotional health are two very different things. This article will explain the differences and how we can achieve both.

Wearable technology enables people to monitor their health. A range of products are on the market that can measure your heart rate, sleep, and recovery. These include responsive sportswear, wearable spaces, and smart clothing. The first of these devices, the smart watch, dominates the fashion accessory market. New developments fill the gaps in the health-driven industry. For example, the NADI X yoga pants have built-in sensors that vibrate to correct a person’s posture. Similarly, Hexoskin manufactures socks that count calories.

Health is a human right, defined by the World Health Organization in 1948. According to the WorldHealth Organization, everyone has the right to enjoy the highest possible standard of health, regardless of race, political belief, or economic status. In fact, many nation states have endorsed this concept as a part of their constitutions. They are now legally obligated to protect access to quality health, including providing for the determinants of it. This is because the world’s population is increasing at an alarming rate, and the world is losing people to illness and disease.

Star forward Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti will take some time away from football because of personal reasons, Essendon announced yesterday.

It is unsure when the 28-year-old will return from personal leave, as he continues to deal with personal matters while managing a calf injury that has slowed his pre-season.

Bombers football boss Josh Mahoney said McDonald-Tipungwuti would have the full support of the club during his leave of absence.

“Anthony has been very open with us about some of his personal struggles and coupled with his recovery from a calf injury, we felt this leave period was in the best interests to support Anthony.

“He is a much-loved member of our football club, and we will continue to care for, and fully support, Anthony throughout this time and we look forward to his return in the future.”

McDonald-Tipungwuti missed several games at the end of last season, including the Bombers’ finals campaign due to personal reasons.

Australia are without a permanent coach, after Justin Langer announced his resignation this morning. But what happens next?

Who will take over?

There’s no shortage of replacement candidates, with a few local candidates in the mix, as well as international names such as Gary Kirsten and Stephen Fleming. Here are four of the most-likely options:

Andrew McDonald

The former Victorian all-rounder was today named by Cricket Australia as interim head coach following Langer’s departure. The 40-year-old who played four Test matches for Australia has enjoyed a meteoric rise up the coaching ranks in the past few years, leading the Victorian state side to a Sheffield Shield in his debut 2016 season.

He also coached the Melbourne Renegades and Rajasthan Royals in their respective T20 competitions, and has established a reputation as a ‘players’ coach’ in his stint as Langer’s deputy – well liked by the senior players, including captain Pat Cummins.

Andrew McDonald is the only realistic contender to replace Justin Langer, according to Dirk Nannes.

Jason Gillespie

The South Australian state coach, who enjoyed a successful spell as coach of Yorkshire in England’s County set-up, has been repeatedly linked with the England job, but is now immediately in the frame to take the top job in his home country instead.

Like Langer, Gillespie was a mainstay in the Test team in the late 1990s and early 2000s, arguably the most successful period in the team’s history.

Trevor Bayliss

Possibly the most-decorated Australian coach to not have ever had the top job, Bayliss would be a slam dunk choice for Cricket Australia for several reasons.

In his first year as a coach way back in 2004, Bayliss won the Sheffield Shield with New South Wales. In the two decades since he has led Sri Lanka to a World Cup final in 2011, and won the trophy with England in 2019.

In between those two international gigs, Bayliss’ time at the Sydney Sixers resulted in both a Big Bash and Champions League win.

Ricky Ponting

Ponting’s knowledge of the game and his time as captain during a great period of success have made him a coveted name in the coaching world, but given that he has been particularly harsh on the way Langer has been treated, that may make him hestitant to take the job if it were offered to him.

Ricky Ponting

He has publicly campaigned for his friend and former teammate to be re-signed for weeks, and as soon as the announcement of the resignation was made public, he blasted the decision on ABC radio.

“It’s been a really poor six months with the way Cricket Australia have handled some of the better people in Australian cricket, those being Justin Langer and Tim Paine,” Ponting said.

“I think it’s been almost embarrassing the way they handled those two cases.”

Ponting also criticised Pat Cummins’ hestitance to publicly back Langer – which would prove to be another stumbling block.

What staggers Chappell amid Langer-CA wrestle

Could there be two head coaches?

There is a chance that Australia will move forward with two head coaches in the men’s set-up; one overseeing red ball cricket, and the other focusing on white ball.

“I think that’s always something that could be looked at,” chairman of selectors George Bailey told AAP late last year.

“Depending on who the coach is, who the captain is, what your sort of mix is across teams of how many players go across formats.”

Langer was adamant that he would remain across Tests, ODIs and T20, but with a clean slate, Cricket Australia could opt to go down the split route.

What’s next for Langer?

Before his departure from the Australian team had even been announced, England fans had been cheekily congratulating Langer on his appointment as their new coach.

Michael Vaughan is one prominent member of the old guard in England who is pushing for Langer to get the job.

“I do not see anyone else better suited than Langer to crack heads together and bring some tough management to a group of England players who have become too cosy recently,” he wrote in his Telegraph column yesterday.

“This England Test team needs some tough love. Joe Root needs a forceful coach next to him too.

“Gary Kirsten would be a great candidate as well but if you want one person to come in with a huge point to prove then it is Langer. He is an Ashes winner, T20 World Cup winner and knows everything about playing in Australia. Just go and get him.”

Australian Boomers and Illawarra Hawks coach Brian Goorjian said there’s no reason that injured NBA star Joe Ingles couldn’t come back to Australia to finish his career.

Ingles, 34, is in the last year of a deal with the Utah Jazz – which makes the timing of his ACL injury as bad as possible.

However, Goorjian said there was every chance Ingles could make a full recovery and see out the remainder of his career at home.

: Chilling reason Olympic great feared being killed

“There’s no doubt in my mind that he’d come back,” Goorjian told SEN radio.

“He loves the competition, he loves Australia.”

Ingles did at one point ply his trade in the NBL, playing three seasons for the now-defunct South Dragons at the start of his career.

He spent a few seasons in Europe before debuting with the Jazz in 2014, where he has become a mainstay. He is the franchise’s current record holder for three-pointers.

“I always had that feeling that at the end of his career, he would play a few (seasons) in the NBL.”

Goorjian did add that the choice was completely up to Ingles, praising his mental fortitude.

“If he says I want two more in the NBA and win a ring… whatever he’ll put his mind to, he’ll do,” he said.

“I just want Joe to do what he wants to do.”

New Zealand’s six Super Rugby Pacific teams will relocate to the winter resort town of Queenstown for the opening rounds of the competition.

NZ Rugby confirmed the move today to minimise the risk of COVID-19 interfering with the schedule.

The squads will operate in separate bubbles with day games played at Queenstown’s Wakatipu Rugby Club and teams busing to Invercargill’s Rugby Park for night matches.

Watch the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season on Stan Sport, ad-free, live and on demand. Start your seven day free trial here!

The season kicks off on February 18 with the first trans-Tasman games scheduled for a ‘Super Round’ in Melbourne on April 22-24.

“Under current COVID-19 regulations it would only take one positive case entering a squad environment to shut down an entire squad for 10 days,” NZ Rugby’s Chris Lendrum said.

“The knock-on effect for the rest of the competition would be the postponement or cancellation of matches. By moving the teams to a secure hub, we believe we have a good chance of preventing a COVID-19 infection, or close contact event, sidelining one of our teams for a prolonged period.

: Humble Aussies turn heads after winning gold

“The plan is currently for the teams to move to Queenstown early next week and remain in Queenstown for the opening three weeks of the competition.”

Lendrum stressed the move to Queenstown was seen as a temporary measure.

“We are committed to bringing the teams home in early March regardless of the COVID-19 landscape. We realise there is a significant sacrifice in leaving whnau behind to play these matches.”

Meanwhile, Wallabies great Sekope Kepu has been named the inaugural captain of the new Moana Pasifika team.

The 35-year-old prop was born in Sydney to Tongan parents and grew up in Auckland.

“Coming back to New Zealand I never thought I would play rugby again,” Kepu said.

“God works in mysterious ways, to be here and then called into the Moana Pasifika team, it was something I didn’t think twice about…

“My wife was in tears. My kids were really happy… it means the world to us and it’s making them proud, doing my job for this team.”

The Cleveland Browns say suggestions by former coach Hue Jackson and an associate that he was paid by the team to lose games are “completely fabricated.”

Jackson, who is now coaching at Grambling, made several posts on Twitter inferring that he received bonus payments from Browns owner Jimmy Haslam during his two-plus seasons with the team.

The Browns strongly refuted Jackson’s claims.

“The recent comments by Hue Jackson and his representatives relating to his tenure as our head coach are completely fabricated,” team spokesperson Peter Jean-Baptiste said in a statement. “Any accusation that any member of our organisation was incentivised to deliberately lose games is categorically false.”

Hue Jackson walks off the field prior to a game against the Cleveland Browns

Jackson was fired eight games into the 2018 season. He went 3-36-1 with Cleveland, losing all 16 games in 2017.

In offering support to former Miami coach Brian Flores — who has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the NFL and three teams on allegations of racial discrimination and unethical practices — Jackson made statements implying the Browns paid him to lose.

In response to a tweet suggesting Haslam wasn’t offering him (USD) $100,000 per loss — the amount Flores claims the Dolphins wanted to pay him — Jackson wrote that Haslam “was happy while we kept losing” and “Trust me it was a good number.”

Also, Kimberly Diemert, executive director of the Hue Jackson Foundation, which works to combat human trafficking, made several posts claiming the Browns made the offer to Jackson and that they have records that will help Flores.

Jackson did not immediately respond to messages left by the AP.

This morning, Diemert again went on Twitter to say she has proof of Jackson’s claims, and said he and Flores are acting to benefit others.

“Fighting for what is right for everybody is what matters most,” she wrote. “Both of these men have been fighting the right fight. People who know the facts know the fight. To win the war you must be strategic.”

Jackson was hired by the Browns in 2016 after serving as Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator. The team was in a full rebuilding mode and general manager Sashi Browns was aggressive in trying to acquire draft picks.

The Browns went 1-15 in Jackson’s first season, got the No.1 overall pick and selected defensive end Myles Garrett, who has become one of the league’s best players. Cleveland went 0-16 in 2017 before taking quarterback Baker Mayfield with the top pick.

Jackson was fired after the Browns started 2-5-1 in 2018.

Wildcats centre Matt Hodgson looks set for a stint on the sidelines after he was ejected during Perth’s 96-81 loss to the Sydney Kings today for igniting a scuffle.

During the third quarter, with Perth trailing by 19 at the time, Hodgson was exchanging words with Kings guard Dejan Vasiljevic when he suddenly lost his cool.

The Perth big man lashed out with two slaps to the face of Vasiljevic as players from both sides rushed in.

Hodgson was immediately ejected, and it’s like the centre will face some time on the sidelines.

“Something snapped in Matt Hodgson because he’s going to be spending some time on the sidelines I suspect,” said Australian basketball legend Andrew Gaze in commentary.

“Not just the one hit, there was two.”

Hodgson’s wild moment left fans and pundits outraged.

Former NBA star and Sydney Kings centre Andrew Bogut led much of the debate, questioning the league on what the impending punishment will be.

By MIKE MAGEE

It is fair to say that the vast majority of Americans know more about viruses today than they did 24 months ago. The death and destruction in the wake of COVID-19 and its progeny have been a powerful motivator. Fear and worry tend to focus one’s attention.

Our collective learnings are evolving. We have already seen historic comparisons to other epidemics. Just search “The 10 worst epidemics” for confirmation. But one critical area which has been skimmed over, and only delicately probed (if at all) is the ecology or “the ecological point of view.”

For those interested, let me recommend “Natural History of Infectious Disease” published in 1972 by Nobel laureate and Australian biologist Sir Macfarlane Burnet and his colleague David O. White.

Chapter 1 begins: “In the final third of the twentieth century, we of the affluent West are confronted with no lack of environmental, social, and political problems, but one of the immemorial hazards of human existence is gone. Young people today have had almost no experience of serious infectious disease…For the first time in history deaths in infancy and childhood are not predominantly from infection.” But a few sentences on, they add this addendum, “Infectious diseases may be almost invisible, but it is still potentially as important as ever it was.”

Americans are all too familiar with the living biologic organism named COVID-19. By now, they know what it looks like, the role of its outer spikes, its nuclear makeup, and genetic alterations that allow the creation of derivative variants and vaccines. But in addition to its biological science, it also has an ecological life as well.

As the authors say, ecology “deals with the interaction of organisms with their environment and especially with other organisms, whether of their own or different species in the environment.” When ecology is applied to the natural history of infectious diseases, we encounter the discipline of epidemiology – the study of the incidence, distribution, and possible control of the disease.

In the eyes of an ecologist, all living entities are survivalists, and there is little difference (except in size) between a parasitic microorganism and a large predatory carnivore. They all need nourishment. As our experts write, whether the bite comes from inside or out, “It is just another method of obtaining food from the tissues of living animals.” COVID-19 is an organism that is “smaller and less highly differentiated than its host…and gains its nourishment at the expense of the host’s living substances.”

Checks and balances rule in the world of ecology absent human intervention. The authors illustrate this with an example. In the late 19th century, orange growers in California reached an industrial scale. In 1888, little white cushions began to appear on their trees. Within them were tiny, sap-sucking insects, and the damaged trees’ production of fruit plummeted. The responsible “scale insect”, it was found, was a foreign invader from Australia.

In Australia, its primary nutrition came from the native acacia tree. Orange trees were infested as well but rarely damaged. This was because the insects’ numbers were naturally controlled by a local ladybird beetle. As the ecologists explained, “If the scale insect is particularly plentiful, the ladybird larvae find an abundant food supply, and the beetles in turn become more plentiful. An excessive number of ladybirds will so diminish the population of scale insects that there will be insufficient food for the next generation and therefore fewer ladybirds.”

But in California, there were no ladybird beetles. And so the agricultural leaders in 1889 imported the beetles, and once they reached adequate numbers in the orchards, the scale beetle “was reduced in importance to a relatively trivial pest.”

Simple, right? Well not exactly. As our experts write, “The mutual adjustment is an immensely complicated process, for all the food chains concerned are naturally interwoven, and for every species, there will be fluctuations in numbers from time to time, but on the whole, in a constant environment a reasonable approach to a stable balance will be maintained.”

For predators of any shape or size (and that includes a virus) , “there is less opportunity for enemies…of restricted prey to thrive at their expense.” Vaccination, masking, and distancing, in effect, restrict us as potential prey to COVID-19.

Another point. Our ecologists remind us that “Most parasites are restricted to one host species (for their nutrition)…and the main problem that a parasitic species have to solve if it is to survive, is to manage the transfer of its offspring from one individual host to another.” That often requires intermediate hosts “whose movement or activities will help the transfer to fresh, final hosts…an increased density of the susceptible population will facilitate its spread.”

To cite a modern example, a certain percentage of fully boosted and immunized are able to be infected by the Omicron variant and remain asymptomatic carriers and spreaders, especially if they enter dense gatherings where they and unvaccinated and unmasked persons are present in crowds.

One last caution as we continue to investigate the origins of this pandemic: The authors warn that “disastrous disturbances of natural ecosystems” are often the result of “irresistible pressure of technological advance…short term human benefit will sooner or later bring long-term ecological or social problems which demand unacceptable effort and expense for their solution.”

As we corner our biologic adversary, it might be useful to examine this unfortunate disaster closely and thoughtfully, through an ecological lens.

<![CDATA[

Calendar displayed on a desk showing days in a month

At the beginning of the pandemic, little was known about the novel coronavirus we now know as SARS-CoV-2 – or as its commonly called COVID-19.

Two of the things we did not know were how long an infection lasts or whether you could be infected more than once. We have been monitoring test results since June 2021 to gain answers to these questions and have published analysis in the weekly Influenza and COVD Surveillance reports.

Although reinfections were initially very rare, we have seen the number rising slowly over the last two years, as immunity from prior infection wanes and new variants emerge. During the Omicron variant wave, the number and proportion of people being reinfected with SARS-CoV-2 has increased. Additionally, as so many people have now experienced infection since 2020, there is a larger pool of people in which reinfection can occur.

To adapt to this changing picture, UKHSA has changed the case definition for COVID-19.

How are episodes of COVID-19 defined?

Until now, COVID-19 cases have been reported at the individual level: every positive test taken and reported by one person has been considered part of a single case record, initiated by their first positive test.

Most infectious diseases unfortunately have the potential to infect people more than once. The frequency at which this happens varies between diseases, as does the definition of an episode, but the principle remains the same.

Based on evidence from the SIREN study (on the SIREN portal, and in The Lancet), an episode definition has now been created.

In short, positive tests belonging to the same person are grouped together and considered one episode if they are within 90 days. Positive tests results that are 90 days apart (regardless of negative tests in between) will be considered as a separate episode of infection, and therefore the person is counted as a case more than once. These subsequent episodes are called ‘possible reinfections’.

For example, if a person tests positive one day (day zero) and again 100 days later (day 101), they would be deemed as having two case episodes of infection. However, if they tested positive on day zero, day 30, and day 101, all these tests would be grouped into a single case episode of infection.

This episode definition is based solely on time and does not consider negative test results, nor whole-genome sequencing results. Current evidence and evaluations suggest that this has minimal impact on the case episode figures. As always, UKHSA and our partners will continue to monitor and update our methodologies as appropriate.

What this means for the COVID-19 response

The case definition that has existed since the beginning of the pandemic (individual level) has been the surveillance definition on which the UK Coronavirus Dashboard analysis, and reports have been based. However, contact tracing has undertaken a very safe practice of following all positive cases, regardless of whether they were possible reinfections or cases of prolonged infection.

The change in the case definition to one based on episodes means that case rates will change and better reflect current rates of infection in the community. From 31 January 2022, the time of this change, the total increase in the number of cases in England is around 4.0%, representing 588,114 cases over the entire period of the pandemic. However, most of the added episodes have been since the emergence of Omicron in the UK; currently around 10% of new episodes each day are reinfection episodes.

Due to the statistically small numbers involved until now, it is very unlikely that had these cases been previously included in the surveillance database and reports, they would have had any substantial impact on situational assessments and national or regional level decision making.

Furthermore, when considering levels of transmission, case rates are rarely used in isolation and are supported by a range of other relevant metrics – such as positivity rates, ONS prevalence estimates and R consensus statements by region.

Changes have now been made to many metrics on the UK Coronavirus Dashboard, details of which can be found here – Metrics update.

How the change is being made

COVID-19 test results from laboratories across the country, including NHS and UKHSA labs, UK Government lighthouse laboratories, and private testing providers, are reported to UKHSA’s Second-Generation Surveillance System (SGSS). SGSS collects and organises positive test results for all notifiable diseases from over 225 laboratories across the UK.

When a positive test result is reported by a laboratory to SGSS, it goes through linkage processes to validate who the sample was taken from using the NHS patient records and then goes into the deduplication logic to form part of the case dataset.

Up until now, this deduplication logic means that if an individual has not had a previous positive COVID-19 test, they enter the case dataset (known in epidemiological lingo as a “linelist”). However, if that individual has already had a positive Covid-19 test result reported they will already exist in the linelist and so will be deduplicated. This ensures that the individual only exists in the linelist once. This process happens to all new positive test results every day.

In the new process, this deduplication logic considers the episode definition and assigns positive tests results to episode records (rather than individual records) as appropriate.

To make this change, the team that run SGSS need to undo all the deduplication that has happened to positive COVID-19 test results, and then redo it using the new episode definition. This involves [A] positive test results being deduplicated into [B] episodes (as of 31st January), all in one day, so we have a seamless transition of data going into surveillance, analysis, and of course the UK Coronavirus Dashboard.

Public Health Agencies in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland are similarly updating their case definitions to this episodes-based (90-days apart) definition. They will make the changes to the data they provide to the UK Coronavirus Dashboard in due course.

Looking forward, UKHSA will continue to monitor test results and reinfections to ensure that we work to our responsibility to protecting every member of every community from the impact of infectious diseases.

With his epic five set win at the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal claimed an elusive 21st Grand Slam title, etching himself into the history books as the most successful male tennis player ever.

Separating himself from ‘big three’ rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, Nadal can now happily bask in the accolades and self-satisfaction of being the game’s greatest by the numbers.

However, the 35-year-old is uninterested in the GOAT tag.

AS IT HAPPENED: Nadal trumps Medvedev in epic AO final

Speaking in his post-match press conference – held in the early hours this morning – Nadal said winning his second Australian Open title meant more to him than being considered the greatest of all time.

“I don’t care much if I am the one or not the one or the best of the history, not the best of the history,” he said.

“Honestly today I don’t care much.

“For me, it’s about enjoying nights like today. That means everything for me, no? Means even more to achieve the second Australian Open more than any other thing.

“Of course, for me it’s amazing to achieve another grand slam at this moment of my career. It means a lot to me. Of course, I know it’s a special number, 21.

“I mean, I know how it means, no? Is of big significance this title, no?

“But from my point of view… I believe today is an unforgettable day. I never will say I deserve, because I think a lot of people fight and a lot of people deserve [it].

“But I really believe that I hold a very positive spirit. For the last six months, I really fighted [sic] a lot to try to be back on court.

“I was repeating to myself during the whole match, I lost a lot of times here having chances, sometimes I was a little bit unlucky. I just wanted to keep believing till the end, no?

“Tonight was for me 2012, 2017, 2014 with the injury, too, I have been in that position couple of times in my career here in Australia.

“Tonight have been unforgettable. I feel very lucky.”

After winning his first Australian Open championship in 2009 against Djokovic, Nadal lost his next four finals at Rod Laver Arena, battling debilitating injuries in between.

The Spaniard now boasts 13 French Open titles, four US Open titles and two titles at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open throughout a 21 year career, making him the fourth man in history to win all four majors on multiple occasions.

By JEFF GOLDSMITH

These are grim days for innovative healthcare companies. The health tech and care innovation firms mature enough to make it to public markets have been eviscerated in the ongoing market correction. As of January 29, 2022, high fliers like One Medical (down 83% from peak), Oscar (down 83%), Bright Healthcare (down 85%), Teladoc (down 77% but still selling at 6X revenues!), and AmWell (down 90%) are the tip of a much larger melting iceberg. The dozens of digital health unicorns (e.g. pre-public companies valued at more than $1 billion) and their less mythical brethren, into which investors poured more than $45 billion during 2020-2021, are sheltering in the comparative safety of VC/Private Equity balance sheets. They are protected from investor wrath until those firms’ limited partners force a revaluation of their portfolios based on the market value of their publicly traded comparables.

Yet it is the next moves that these innovative firms and their equity holders make that will determine whether these firms realize their full transformative potential or fade into insignificance. The Gartner Group, which tracks the technology industry generally, popularized the notion of the Hype Cycle- a seemingly universal trajectory that tech innovations and the firms that produce them follow (see below).

                                                    The Gartner Hype Cycle

Everyone seems to focus on the colorful first phase of this cycle- the inflating and deflating part- where an innovation rises on a wave of the adulatory press (and breathless futurist punditry), then crashes ignominiously into the Slough of Despond. A classic example was the Apple iPhone’s ill-starred great uncle, the Apple Newton, which launched in 1993 and crashed shortly thereafter.

For founders and investors, as well as customers, however, it is the less visible succeeding phases that determine if the innovation survives and the firms that produce them become ubiquitous and indispensable parts of our lives. The rising initial phase of Gartner’s Hype Cycle is driven by the question “Is it cool”?, mediated by hyperactive media and Internet buzz. The inevitable crash, on the other hand, is almost always driven by the troublesome real-world question, “Does the product actually work as advertised?” Analysts, writers, and, most importantly, customers press uncomfortable questions about not only functionality, but also reliability, affordability, stickiness, and “value for money”.

How do firms survive the crash and climb Gartner’s “Slope of Enlightenment”? This is the unglamorous “pick and shovel” part. If the sticky “product integrity” issues (does the product actually work?) are resolved, then a host of important questions challenge the firm, its founders, and owners, which answers the crucial question: whether it is a real business:

  1. Product-market fit (e.g. how, precisely does the innovation create value for customers and for whom?) Who are the actual customers for the product? Does the product need to be modified to meet their needs?
  2. Business model (e.g. can we be paid adequately by those customers for what we produce?),
  3. Scalability (can we actually deliver the product at scale sufficiently to, at some magic point, return investors’ capital?) and, crucially,
  4. Management (do we have the right people in key positions?).

Investor wisdom and judgment are the crucial ingredients here. At this point, if investors act decisively, the Adam Neumanns and Travis Kalanicks are ejected from the firms they founded, and more experienced and capable managements are recruited to manage this complex process. In the event that the owners cannot satisfactorily answer the ultimate existential question- is this a real business?- equity holders may decide to exit, and sell the business and its problems to others.

Teladoc and AmWell began the rolling up process years ago, before the 2020/2021 explosion in digital market caps. Whether they have cleaned up the problems they inherited with their acquisitions remains to be seen. Private equity-funded startups are now aggressively competing to be dominant full-stack. multi-product platforms, a space that has gotten absurdly crowded very quickly. It is possible that no one actually wins the platform wars presently underway. There is tremendous dynamism and promise in digital health, not only in digital care provision, but also infrastructure that automates or simplifies payment transactions, facilitates hard connections to care systems, and coordinates different modalities, including AI-assisted chatbots, avatars, and other communication tools.

It is not challenging to identify the consolidators of digital health that will emerge in this sorting and revaluation process. The first and most significant among them is UnitedHealth Group’s Optum subsidiary. United has almost $70 billion in cash, piling up at the astonishing rate of $2 billion a month. United/Optum has the management discipline to wait, select carefully and not overpay. But other large incumbent healthcare actors will play a key role, including CVS/Aetna, HCA, Anthem, CIGNA, Ascension Health, Pittsburgh’s UPMC, Intermountain Healthcare, etc. all of which have made cautious forays into the sectors presently correcting- digital health, Medicare Advantage and at-risk primary care.

In another promising approach, Intermountain, in partnership with two other large care systems, has created a non-profit “market-making” enterprise called Graphite Health (https://www.graphitehealth.io) that will act as an “App Store” for digital health solutions. Graphite is intended to fill a critical gap- the lack of digital health performance standards- efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness- that makes it difficult or impossible for institutional purchasers (not to mention patients) to make rational choices among a welter of competing options.

And of course, there will be the hungry outsiders that wish a larger healthcare presence- notably Amazon, Walmart, and Microsoft – that have made recent investments targeted at key health industry segments -pharma supply chain, urgent care, speech recognition, e.g. Transaction costs and complexity of integration will create huge income streams for bankers, the legal community and consultants, who win regardless of the payoffs for founders and equity holders.

The crash into Gartner’s Trough of Disillusionment is not the end of the game.

The unglamorous but crucial Darwinian process of weeding out the opportunists and fabulists from the real businesses- the enterprises that will change our lives- is just beginning. This process will stretch out over the remainder of this decade.

UPDATED: Melbourne Storm prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona has returned to regular NRL duties after he was spotted at the club’s facilities today.

Asofa-Solomona’s future in the NRL had looked clouded in recent months after it was revealed he was initially refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Storm CEO Justin Rodski confirmed Asofa-Solomona had provided the necessary information to comply with state government protocols.

“It is great to have Nelson back at the club and back with his teammates,” Rodski said.

“It has been a slightly interrupted build up for Nelson but importantly he has been completing his own individual training program over the last few months away from the club”

“He has returned to training in good shape, and we are confident he will be ready for selection ahead of Round 1 of the season.”

While the NRL has not mandated vaccines for players or staff, the Victorian government is strict on professional athletes getting jabbed before they’re allowed to participate in competition or team activities.

And while there were reports the 130kg prop was looking elsewhere, including Japanese rugby, he appears set to stay.

Teammate Brandon Smith shared an Instagram story of the 25-year-old Asofa-Solomona making his way into the Storm’s facilities earlier today.

The Instagram post was accompanied by the Eminem song ‘Without Me’.

That song is famous for its lyrics “guess who’s back”, which was heard during Smith’s Instagram story.

West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson says young gun Oscar Allen will enact a new role this season as a permanent key forward, as the club plans to be without leading goalkicker Jack Darling.

Darling’s playing future remains in doubt after the 29-year-old failed to satisfy the AFL’s COVID-19 vaccine requirements, barring the star forward from attending pre-season training.

Speaking to AFL.com.au, Simpson said the club would play Allen as a forward, regardless of what unfolded with Darling.

Oscar Allen marks the ball.

“His availability has been critical for his preparation (and) he’s extended himself and gone to another level with his training,” he said.

“He has actually used Jack as a real beacon for work ethic and they both came back in tremendous shape.

“To put it into practice on game day and see some results, that’s the plan, but at the moment he hasn’t put a foot wrong.

“We probably won’t play him in the ruck this year and just let him play as a key position forward and try and get him settled.”

Allen was recently named in the club’s leadership group for the first time, flagging the 22-year old as a keystone of the club’s future.

Previously splitting his time as a forward, defender and alternate ruckman, Allen excited in 2021, scoring 16 goals in the first six rounds.

The Herald Sun reported this week that Darling is considering the novavax vaccine, which could be available as early as February 21. He is the only West Coast player yet to receive a first vaccine dose and is so far hesitant to be vaccinated.

Australian curlers Tahli Gill and Dean Hewitt have suffered a last gasp defeat in their opening round robin match of the Winter Olympics.

Competition has begun with curlers the first athletes in action ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday night.

And the Aussies fell agonisingly short in their first match-up against American duo Chris Plys and Vicky Persinger.

After a fast start by the Australian pair which saw them open up a 5-3 lead, the US team went on a run to draw level before the Aussies had a chance to snatch it late.

Gill missed an opportunity with the last stone but missed by the barest of margins as she attempted to put Australia up 6-5.

That opened the door for Team USA and they were able to earn a steal for the winning point – known in curling as the hammer – to seal the win 6-5.

“That last shot could have been made, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. I’ll make sure to make it next time,” said Gill.
